Thinking about\u00a0buying a home<\/a>? If so, you\u2019re probably wondering:\u00a0should I buy now or wait?<\/em>\u00a0Nobody can make that decision for you, but here\u2019s some information that can help you decide.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Next for Home Prices?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Each quarter,\u00a0Fannie Mae and<\/em>\u00a0Pulsenomics<\/em>\u00a0publish the results of the\u00a0Home Price Expectations Survey<\/em>\u00a0(HPES). It asks more than 100 experts\u2014economists, real estate professionals, and investment and market strategists\u2014what they think will happen with\u00a0home prices<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0latest survey<\/a>, those experts say home prices are going to keep going up for the next five years (see graph below<\/em>):<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what all the green on this chart should tell you. They\u2019re not expecting any price declines. Instead, they\u2019re saying we\u2019ll see a 3-4% rise\u00a0each year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And even though home prices aren\u2019t expected to climb by as much in 2025 as they are 2024, keep in mind these increases can really add up over time. It works like this. If these experts are right and your home\u2019s value goes up by 3.78% this year, it\u2019s set to grow another 3.36% next year. And another 3.87% the year after that.<\/p>\n

What Does This Mean for You?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Knowing that prices are forecasted to keep going up should make you feel good about\u00a0buying a home<\/a>. That\u2019s because it means your home is an asset that\u2019s projected to grow in value in the years ahead.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not convinced yet, maybe these numbers will get your attention. They show how a typical home\u2019s value could change over the next few years using expert projections from the\u00a0HPES<\/a>. Check out the graph below:<\/p>\n

In this example, imagine you bought a home for $400,000 at the start of this year. Based on these projections, you could end up gaining over $83,000 in household wealth over the next five years as your home grows in value.<\/p>\n

Of course, you could also wait \u2013 but if you do, buying a home is just going to end up costing you more.<\/p>\n

Bottom Line<\/h3>\n

You should now be able to answer the question, does it make sense to buy a home now.\u00a0 If you’re thinking it’s time to get your own place, and you\u2019re ready and able to do so, buying now might be the best thing for you!\u00a0 Your home is expected to keep getting more valuable as prices<\/a>\u00a0go up.
